Srinagar, April 21: Amid coronavirus lockdown, district administration Baramulla has failed to stop illegal excavation of soil in Gowardan, Parihaspora, posing a threat to historic monuments in the village.Sources at Devar Parihaspora told JKNS that during the prevailing lockdown situation, that illegal soil excavation is going unchecked in the area.“As per the sources, the tractors laden with soil are being smuggled during the night. The area is adjacent to Buddhist monuments and it is posing threat to rich heritage,” they said.Another local wishing not be quoted said the site has been declared protected by Archeological Survey of India (ASI), but despite repeated pleas to concerned tehsildar things have remained unchanged on the ground.“It seems both police and administration are hands in glue with the contractors who are excavating the soil illegally in the village,” he said.Earlier, J&K high court has also banned the soil excavation but there seems no end as they are openly violating those orders.As per the sources, mostly during the night, the tractors are being used to ferry soil to other areas, whle as the administration is acting as a mute spectator on the issue.Earlier, revenue officials assured that they would visit the site but expect they didn’t. The influential contractors use JCB’s to bulldoze the Karenawas in the area, they said.Meanwhile, Tehsildar Singpora Pattan, Nisar Ahmad Ahwar told JKNS that he would send a team to for spot visit in the area and ascertain the facts.“I have conveyed to concerned Mirgund police station and they would initiate an action against the people involved in the process,” Ahwar said.
