Cold wave freezes Kashmir, Srinagar shudders at minus 5.9 degrees Celsius

Srinagar, 31 Dec: The minimum temperature in Srinagar dropped to minus 5.9 degrees Celsius on Thursday – four degrees below the normal temperature for this time of the year, according to Kashmir Weather, an independent weather forecaster.

Gulmarg continued to be the coldest place in the valley with a minimum temperature of minus 10.6 degrees Celsius.

The night temperature at Pahalgam resort, which also serves as one of the base camps for the annual Amarnath yatra in south Kashmir, settled at a low of minus 9.6 degrees Celsius as against minus 9.0 degrees Celsius on Wednesday.

Qazigund, the gateway town to the valley, in south Kashmir recorded a low of minus 6.2 degrees Celsius, down from Wednesday’s minus 2.5 degrees Celsius.

Kokernag town, also in south, recorded a low of minus 7.8 degrees Celsius, while Kupwara, in north, registered the minimum of minus 5.8 degrees Celsius.

Leh town, in the Ladakh Union territory, recorded a low of minus 15.8 degrees Celsius compared to the previous night’s minus 14.8 degrees.

The nearby Drass town froze at a low of minus 28.3 degrees Celsius.

Jammu city recorded 2.8 degrees Celsius, Katra 3.7, Batote 0.3, Banihal 1.4 and Bhaderwah minus 4.4 as the night’s lowest temperatures.

Kashmir Weather has forecast mainly dry weather for next 3 days with chance of widespread snowfall around 5th January.
