Avian Influenza: DC Kulgam Chairs meeting of officers

KULGAM, JANUARY 25: Following confirmation of presence of Avian Influenza Virus among dead crows spotted at Manzgam village of the district, The Deputy Commissioner (DC) Kulgam, Showkat Aijaz Bhat today convened an urgent meeting of officers, here.

The meeting discussed measures to control the further spread of the virus and accordingly the area within the radius of 01 KM of the Manzgam village was declared as ‘Alert Zone’.  Chief Animal Husbandry Officer (CAHO) Kulgam, was directed to conduct random sampling within the Alert Zone and surveillance be intensified in the whole area.

The ways and means to prevent transmission of virus to poultry was also discussed and it was informed that Bio-Security has to be strengthened and disinfectants shall be sprayed in the entire area, where the mortality in birds has been reported and the same shall be carried out by CAHO in collaboration with Forest Department and Wildlife Department.

It was given out that the dead birds (if any) should be disposed-off by deep burial. For sample collection and testing, the bird may be sent to the lab in adherence to bio-safety and zoo-sanitary measures.

The Forest and Wildlife Departments were directed to increase vigil and surveillance in the area.

Meanwhile, to prevent transmission of disease to Poultry and Human Beings, several guidelines/advisories were issued which include avoiding contact with wild/migratory birds, Avoid contact with places where migratory birds use to visit for feeding/water.

The general public have been informed that in case of any unusual mortality in poultry/migratory birds contact can be established to  Poultry Extension Officer Kulgam on mobile number (7006260091) and Technical Officer, AHD Kulgam on (7006960640).
