Agriculture in India is backed by a strong seed improvement programme involving both the public and private sectors and is well recognized internationally, explained Kumar.

He further added that seeds play a fundamental role in meeting the triple challenge of improving food security and nutrition, supporting the livelihoods of farmers and rural communities, and contributing to sustainable resource use and climate change adaptation and mitigation. The seed sector directly influences three dimensions of food security and nutrition: food availability, access, and stability, he told.

Greater percentage of improvement in agricultural production has come from the use of improved seeds, but seeds of new varieties must be made available to the farmers in adequate quantity and quality and at affordable prices, and on time, stressed Kumar.
