The University Grants Commission (UGC) has issued a directive, as per Clause 14 of the UGC (Minimum Standards and Procedures for Award of Ph.D. Degree) Regulations 2022, instructing all Higher Educational Institutions to cease the admission process for the Master of Philosophy (M.Phil.) program for the academic year 2023-24. This directive comes in response to a few Universities inviting applications for M.Phil. programs despite its non-recognition.
As per a notification, a copy of which lies with Datesheet.in reads, the UGC, in its regulations published in the Gazette of India on 7th November, 2022, clearly outlined in Regulation No. 14 that offering the M.Phil. program is prohibited by Higher Educational Institutions. Consequently, Universities have been urged to take immediate action to halt admissions to the M.Phil. program and adhere to the UGC’s guidelines.
