Habitual drunkard PHE employee becomes nuisance in Budgam, assaults elderly woman, police takes action

Budgam, Jan 14, : A habitual drunkard, who also happens to be an employee with Department of Jal Shakti (PHE) in central Kashmir’s district Budgam has made life of locals, visitors passers-by and commuters, miserable.

According to local Intezamia Committe, they had moved applications to Police and the concerned Department against Abdul Majeed Ganai, an employee with, PHE, for vitiating the peaceful social fabric of the locality and his unlawful activities few years back. However, no permanent or viable action was taken so far. They said, there were scores of such drunkards in the township, who would gather at a proper spot in the town and drink and indulge in other illicit activities.

“Today in an utterly disgusting event, the accused drunkard, misbehaved and assaulted with an eldry lady of the Mohalla and also threatened to kill her if they stop him from his activities,” president of the local Intezamia Committe, Haji Ghulam Rasool, said.

“All we wanted a necessary action should be initiated against the accused and he should be put behind bars for making life of locals miserable here, ” he added.

Another elderly person from the Intezamia Committe, Sanuallah Ganai, said that the Mohalla Committe had earlier sought his transfer from Budgam PHE to some far off places so that his habit of drinking could subside, however nothing positive came out.

“It is quite dangerous to raise our children in this kind of environment, especially pur daughters,” he said. “The worst and the saddest part is this man has even kicked his own son and his family from his house,” he added.

The Intezamia Committe said that the accused in the past was arrested for remaining under the influence of alcohol all day and roam naked in the locality.

“This has not only derailed our social fabric but our children also witness this unfortunate drama everyday on their streets. This surely is making them vulerable to lot of bad habits.”

The incident happened around 4:30 PM when he was on his way back home after the duty, under the heavy the influence of alchol. He entered his residence at his Mohalla, came our after sometime and started hurling abuses to passer-by which prompted him to indulge into a physical brawl. He also barged into a neighbouring house and physically assaulted an elderly woman, who was intervening him to stop hurling abuses. He allegedly grabbed her by hand after which she raised an alarm and gave her a blow on her head and the woman fell on the road. Later, another, woman chased him and thrashed him with broom in defence till people gathered.

Meanwhile, police swung into action and arrested the accused PHE employee for the ruckus. A senior police officer said that a complaint was received from the victim and the accused was arrested. SHO, Budgam, deputed his team of police officials on the scene and recorded the statements form the Mohalla inhabitants, victims and the family.

The Intezamia Committe and the locals of the area have hailed the Senior Superintendent of Police, SHO, Budgam and the entire team for their efforts to clean the township from drug-addicts and drunkards.
