United Nations: UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said that he had sent his Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator Tom Fletcher to Syria to engage with the transitional government on humanitarian aid.
“In response to recent developments in Syria, I dispatched my Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator, Tom Fletcher, to Damascus to engage with the Caretaker Government on scaling up humanitarian assistance in Syria. Mr. Fletcher met today, Monday, with the Commander of the New Administration, Mr. Ahmed al-Sharaa, and the Prime Minister of the Caretaker Government, Mr. Mohammed al-Bashir,” Guterres said in a statement on Monday.
Guterres welcomes the commitment of the new Syrian government to protect civilians and humanitarian workers, the statement added.
