Freezing cold continues to grip Kashmir valley

Srinagar:  Freezing cold continues to hold its grip in Kashmir valley even as there was slight improvement in night temperature at many places on Wednesday, officials said.

The Meteorological Centre Srinagar said the cold wave will continue with overall no significant change in the weather till December 26.

The minimum temperature at Srinagar recorded during the intervening night of Tuesday and Wednesday slightly improved and recorded at minus 4.5°C against the 5.3°C the previous night. This was 2.5°C below normal for the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir during this period of the season.

Tourist spot of Pahalgam remained the coldest place despite a marginal improvement in the night temperature, recorded at minus 5.8°C against the minus 6.8°C on Tuesday. This was 1.3°C below normal for the valley of shepherds in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district.

The minimum temperature at Qazigund, the gateway town of Kashmir also dropped by a degree and recorded at minus 5.0°C on Wednesday against the minus 6.0°C a day ago and this was 2.7°C below normal for the south Kashmir place during the period.

The night temperature at Kokernag in south Kashmir significantly slipped down and recorded at minus 2.8°C against the minus 5.7°C the previous night and this was 0.7°C below normal for the picnic place of south Kashmir.

The ski resort of Gulmarg witnessed a rise by one degree in the minimum temperature and settled at 5.0°C on Wednesday. However, this was normal for the valley of meadow in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district on this day.

The frontier Kashmir’s Kupwara district further dipped to a low of minus 4.4°C against the minus 5.6 on Tuesday and this was 1.7°C below normal for the border town during this period of season, the MeT office.
