‘Begins on Dec 21, ends on January 30, these forty days test the resilience of both people and nature’

Srinagar: As the dreaded Chillai Kalan is set to arrive tonight in the Valley, Kashmir braces for its 40-day icy ordeal.

The freezing temperatures, biting winds, and expected snowfalls promise both beauty and hardship for the region.

As per the details collected by the news agency JKNS, Chillai Kalan is a test of endurance for the Kashmir Valley. This traditional winter period, deeply rooted in Kashmiri culture, is known for its intensity, often testing the resilience of both people and nature in the Valley.

Abdul Majid, a resident of downtown Srinagar, commenting on Chillai Kalan said, The kangri becomes our best friend during these forty days, and even stepping outside feels like a punishment.

Similarly, for Fazil Ahmad a local from Nowhatta Srinagar, Chillai Kalan is all about survival. “We stock up on firewood, salt, and essentials well in advance. You can’t take chances in this season,” he said.

Notably, for youngsters Chillai Kalan is magical. Sahil, a little child said, “The snow turns everything into a fairytale. It’s harsh, but there’s beauty in it.”

In the meantime, as the Valley is about to transforms into a frosty wonderland with locals are both awed and cautious. While nature’s grandeur attracts tourists, the biting cold keeps Kashmiri traditions like harissa, pashmina, and kangris alive. As Kashmiris prepare to huddle in warmth, the next 40 days will truly test their resilience.—(JKNS)
