Sopore: Amid the intense cold wave gripping Kashmir, children in North Kashmir’s Haritara Sopore have turned a frozen pond into a makeshift cricket pitch, transforming the harsh winter into an opportunity for joy.

Large sections of Srinagar’s Dal Lake have also frozen over as the valley endures Chillai Kalan, the 40-day period known as the harshest stretch of winter in Kashmir.

According to details collected by the news agency JKNS, while the biting cold slows life down for many, these young enthusiasts have embraced the freezing temperatures, playing cricket on the icy surface and captivating the local community.

Notably, the frozen cricket ground, shimmering under the winter sun, has become a symbol of resilience and ingenuity. In a region where temperatures often dip below freezing, the children’s playful spirit shines as they turn an otherwise challenging season into a thrilling experience.

A local elder from Haritara Mohd Yousuf Dar said, it is heartwarming to see them find happiness despite the tough weather. They have turned a harsh reality into something remarkable.

Pertinently, Chillai Kalan is typically marked by heavy snowfall and freezing conditions, forcing much of the valley into a slower pace of life.

However, for these youngsters, the frozen waterbody has become a testament to the unyielding spirit of Kashmiri youth, who refuse to let nature’s severity dampen their passion for play.

As Kashmir braces for the remaining days of Chillai Kalan, scenes of children playing cricket on the icy tracks of Harita Sopore stand as a poignant reminder of the region’s adaptability and the unwavering energy of its youth. —(JKNS)
