No let-up in cold conditions in Kashmir

Srinagar: There is no let-up in cold conditions despite significant improvement in night temperature even as it stayed below freezing point in the Kashmir Valley on Sunday, officials said.

The Meteorological Centre Srinagar forecast the weather will remain mainly dry till January 18 with a chance of light snow over the isolated higher reaches in between January 15 and 16 over Jammu and Kashmir.

The day temperature in Srinagar again plummeted on Saturday amid an overcast sky and recorded 1°C below normal at most of the weather stations.

The minimum temperature recorded during the intervening night of Saturday and Sunday in Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir, was -3.0°C against the -3.6°C the previous night. It was still 1.0°C below the seasonal average for this time of year, the Met office said.

Pahalgam remained the coldest place in the Kashmir Valley in spite of improvement in minimum temperature recorded at -6.2°C on Sunday against the -7.6°C recorded the previous night. This was 0.3°C below normal for the tourist spot of south Kashmir’s Anantnag district during the period.

The ski resort of Gulmarg had a low of -5.6°C against the -6.5°C a day ago, and this was 2.2°C above normal for the tourist resort of North Kashmir’s Baramulla district for the day.

The picturesque Sonamarg also improved and was recorded at -6.5°C on Sunday against the -3.6°C recorded a day ago.

The night temperature witnessed a drop at Kupwara and recorded at a low of -4.0°C against the -4.4°C on the previous night and this was 1.50°C below normal for the frontier Kashmir district in north Kashmir during this period of the season.

The picnic spot of Kokernag in south Kashmir had a low of -3.9°C against the -4.7°C recorded on Saturday and the Qazigund had a low of -4.0°C against the -6.5°C which was 1.0°C below normal for the gateway to Kashmir on Srinagar-Jammu national highway during the period, the MeT office said.
