Jammu: The much-awaited Major Bridge-2 on the Chenani- Sudhmahadev section of National Highway 244, constructed under the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL), is now complete and thrown open to traffic.

The bridge construction began in 2021 by SRM Contractor and is a vital component of the broader NH-244 Development project aimed at enhancing connectivity in the region.

“The infrastructure development will be a boon for commuters traveling to Sudhmahadev, Mantalai, Dudu, Basantgarh and other important destinations,” said an official.

He said that the bridge consists of 6 spans having 2 box girders and 4 PSC- I Girders and the overall length of the bridge is 219.4 metre. The construction of the bridge was challenging due to the height of the bridge which is more than 45 metre.

He said that it will also divert the traffic away from the congested Chenani town and will significantly reduce travel time, alleviate road congestion, and improve the overall commuting experience for both local and long-distance travelers.

The bridge’s completion is a major milestone in the ongoing efforts to modernize and expand the NH-244 highway, he added.

“This project is expected to have a positive impact on the region, providing safer and more efficient access to key tourist destinations while also benefiting residents and businesses by improving overall road safety and accessibility,” the official added.

The Chenani-Sudhmahadev Road project is also in its final stage of completion and will significantly contribute in the economic development of the region, adding he said, “the project is expected to bolster trade, tourism and religious tourism which includes Gaurikund, Gali Mandola, Sudhmahadev, and Mantalai areas, further supporting the region’s growth.”

The opening of Major Bridge-2 marks an important step in the realization of the government’s vision for improved infrastructure and better road connectivity in Jammu and Kashmir, NHIDCL has yet again demonstrated a strong commitment to the region’s development and it also has the credit of Sonmarg Tunnel and upcoming Khellani Tunnel in Doda, said the official.
