Naypyidaw:  Myanmar authorities have declared a state of emergency in earthquake-hit regions, the State Administration Council said here on Friday.

Earlier in the day, a 7.7 magnitude earthquake hit Myanmar, with tremors felt in Bangladesh, India, Laos, China and Thailand.

“The National Disaster Management Committee has declared a state of emergency in earthquake-hit areas of Sagaing Region, Mandalay Region, Magway Region, northeastern part of Shan State, Naypyidaw Union Territory and Bago Region due to the powerful earthquake,” the council said in a statement.

The government intends to promptly investigate the damage in these areas and conduct relief operations, the statement added.
