Theatre as a Weapon Against Drug Abuse: Young Dramatists Society Marks World Theatre Day

Sumbal: The Young Dramatists Society Srinagar and Inder Cultural Forum, in collaboration with Government Degree College Sumbal, successfully organized an impactful event on World Theatre Day 2025, themed “Theatre as a Tool Against Drug Abuse.”

The event, held at Government Degree College Sumbal, brought together theatre artists, academicians, students, and social activists to highlight the role of theatre in addressing the pressing issue of drug abuse. Through thought-provoking performances, discussions, and interactive sessions, the program emphasized the power of theatre as a medium for social awareness and change.
Prominent theatre personalities, Mr. Mohammad Amin Bhat President Adbee Markaz Kamraz presided the function , Mr. Abdul Ahad Farhad (Broadcaster and writer) and Mr. Rashid Rahil (Journalist) was Guest of Honour , Mr. Majeed Majazi (Famous Theatre personality) hosted the programme . Prof. (Dr.) Shabeen Iqbal Shawl , Principal Degree College Sumbal was Chief Guest of the function, Principal GDC sumbal and Dr. Shaista Ahmad Convenors Cultural Committee GDC sumbal and Mr. Rashid Rahil Chief Editor Asian Mail Group has been felicitated award of honour . After concluding the programme Mr. Mushtaq Baqal , Altaf Hussain and Mr. Javid Gilani briefly present their vote of thanks on behalf of the group Young Dramatists Society to the audience. The event underscored the importance of using creative storytelling to educate and inspire communities, particularly youth, to resist substance abuse. The performances by young dramatists vividly depicted the harsh realities of addiction and the pathways to rehabilitation, leaving a lasting impact on the audience.
Young Dramatists Society , a key organizer, stated, “Theatre has historically been a powerful instrument of social change. Today, we reaffirm its potential by addressing the menace of drug abuse and promoting a message of hope and resilience.”
The event concluded with a pledge by attendees to work collectively in spreading awareness and supporting those affected by drug addiction.
