Jammu: Authorities on Saturday said that certain audio clips and news items circulating on WhatsApp groups regarding the presence of terrorists in the R S Pura area are unverified and not confirmed by ground-level reports.

Police spokesperson in a statement to news agency JKNS reads, “Some news items/audios being circulated by few WhatsApp groups regarding presence of terrorists in the R S Pura area, are unconfirmed and not verified from ground formations/reports/checking.”

They advised citizens to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity directly to the police for proper action. “People are advised to report regarding all the suspicious persons/suspicious movements to the police for proper verification/action,” the statement read.

Authorities also warned that the circulation of such unverified information on social media causes unnecessary panic among the general public. “Uploading and forwarding such unverified messages on social media creates panic among the general public,” it stated.

Officials cautioned that legal action may be initiated against those who deliberately attempt to spread panic through false information. “Any such deliberate attempt to create panic among general public through such routine, unverified reports may attract legal action,” they warned.

Citizens have been urged to cooperate with law enforcement agencies. “Cooperate with police for maintaining peace and normalcy in the region,” reads the statement. (JKNS)
