Srinagar: In a significant move to bolster security of key installations across the Union Territory, the Jammu & Kashmir government has approved the deployment of Ex-Servicemen (ESM) volunteers for the protection of critical infrastructure.

According to the Sainik Welfare Board of J&K as per news agency JKNS, which proposed the plan, 4,000 Ex-Servicemen have been identified for deployment, including 435 with licensed personal weapons. These veterans will be tasked with guarding power stations, bridges, government buildings, and other vulnerable assets across all 20 districts.

Officials told JKNS the initiative builds upon the success of the Covid-19 response, where over 2,500 ESM assisted local administration. The government has now expanded the strength to 4,000 to meet present-day security demands.

The veterans will operate under the supervision of District Sainik Welfare Officers (DSWOs) and in coordination with police and civil administration. Their duties will be non-combatant, focusing on static guard roles, deterrence through presence, and local coordination.

Uniforms and essential gear will be provided by the Sainik Welfare Board, while district authorities will assist with logistical and administrative support. Training and orientation sessions are also being planned to ensure effective and standardised operations.

This initiative aims to leverage the discipline and dedication of ex-servicemen while enhancing community-based security, adding a new dimension to public safety efforts across J&K. (JKNS)
