Kishtwar: The District Magistrate of Kishtwar has ordered a complete ban on the use, sale, and distribution of polythene bags less than 120 microns in thickness, citing serious environmental and health concerns.

According to an order issued by DM Rajesh Kumar Shavan (JKAS), a copy of which lies with news agency JKNS, the ban is being enforced under Section 163(1) of Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023. The order states, “There will be a complete prohibition over the production, sale, distribution, and use of polythene bags less than 120 microns in thickness as per government guidelines which cover single-use plastics, including packaging materials, wrappers, and carry bags within Kishtwar jurisdiction.”

It adds that all commercial establishments, retailers, wholesalers, and vendors are directed to cease the sale and usage of these banned materials with immediate effect.

The order also mentions that polythene used for medical or industrial purposes under government-specified conditions shall be exempted.

“The Executive Officer, Municipal Council, Kishtwar and all BDOs shall ensure strict implementation of this order. Heavy penalties will be imposed on defaulters, and seized material will be confiscated,” it reads.

Revenue officials above the rank of Girdawar Circle have also been directed to implement the order without fail. (JKNS)
