Kashmir-Kannada Cinema Breaks New Ground as ‘Harmukh’ Premieres in Srinagar

Srinagar, 25 June: In a landmark moment for Kashmiri cinema, the highly anticipated feature film Harmukh, the first-ever collaborative production in Kashmiri and Kannada, premiered today at INOX Multiplex, Srinagar. This historic event marks a new chapter in regional cinema and celebrates the confluence of two rich cultural traditions — Kashmir and Karnataka.

The premiere was attended by a select gathering of eminent personalities from various walks of life, including noted artists, television and film professionals, businessmen, intellectuals, and political leaders. The event’s highlight was the presence of Dr. Farooq Abdullah, former Chief Minister of Jammu & Kashmir, who graced the occasion as the Chief Guest.

Speaking at the event, Dr. Abdullah emphasized the urgent need for more films in the Kashmiri language as a vital step toward preserving and promoting the region’s linguistic heritage. “Our mother tongue is our identity,” he said. “Cinema is a powerful medium to keep our language alive. Harmukh sets a shining example of how cross-cultural collaboration can help safeguard our traditions.”
Dr. Abdullah expressed his joy at witnessing the first cinematic collaboration between Kashmir and the South Indian film industry, calling it a promising and hopeful beginning. He lauded the producers and the entire creative team behind Harmukh for their dedication, vision, and artistic courage. He also expressed hope that the film will receive enthusiastic support from the public and that multiplexes across the Valley will see packed audiences eager to experience this unique story.
“Harmukh” — A Dream, A Bridge, A Bond

Harmukh is more than just a film — it is “a dream, a bridge, and a bond” between two distant yet emotionally connected regions. The story explores themes of empathy, cultural harmony, and shared humanity through the lens of two families from Kashmir and Karnataka. As they journey through misunderstandings, adversity, and reconciliation, the film celebrates friendship beyond borders.

Penned by renowned South Indian filmmaker Ashok Cashyap, the screenplay seamlessly weaves together the timeless spirit of Kashmir with the warmth and vibrance of Karnataka. Through rich storytelling, the film transcends the barriers of language and geography, offering a universally resonant message of peace and unity. The cinematography and the direction is absolutely brilliant capturing the moods and emotions.

The film has been produced by Dr. Ayash Arif, Mushtaq Ahmad Wani, Masarat Kanji and Ashok Kumar K. Line producer Javed Gora and production design Zahoor Zahid.

The music and songs of Harmukh are deeply moving, echoing the emotional highs and lows of the story. The soundtrack has been praised for its ability to stir the soul and enrich the narrative’s depth. The trailer, which has already garnered attention for its visual elegance and storytelling finesse, promises a gripping cinematic journey.

Outstanding Performances from Legendary and Emerging Artists
Veteran filmmaker and actor T. S. Nagabharana, a legendary figure in Indian cinema with 16 national and state awards, delivers a powerful and dignified performance that anchors the film’s emotional depth. Known for his mastery of the craft and intense screen presence, Nagabharana’s role in Harmukh stands as one of the film’s major highlights.

Joining him is Dr. Ayash Arif, who not only produced the film but also portrays a lead character with remarkable authenticity. His performance is marked by sincerity and emotional nuance, offering a compelling portrayal of a man navigating the complex terrain of identity, loss, and hope.
The chemistry between Nagabharana and Dr. Arif is strikingly heartfelt, forming the emotional core of the film. Their journey together becomes a mirror for the larger themes of reconciliation and human connection that define Harmukh.
