The ultimate sacrifice came on 25 Nov 2018, during a fierce encounter with terrorists in the Batagund village of Shopian. L/Nk Nazir Ahmad Wani, leading his team engaged a group of heavily armed terrorists. Displaying exceptional courage and tactical acumen, he eliminated two terrorists in a close quarter battle. Despite sustaining grave injuries during the firefight, he continued to lead his men, ensuring the neutralization of the remaining terrorists before succumbing to his wounds. His actions that day were pivotal in saving the lives of his comrades and preventing further loss.
For his conspicuous bravery, supreme sacrifice and devotion to duty, L/Nk Nazir Ahmad Wani was posthumously awarded the Ashok Chakra, India’s highest peacetime gallantry award on 26 Jan 2019. This prestigious award is a rare honor, bestowed upon individuals for “most conspicuous bravery or some daring or pre-eminent act of valor or self-sacrifice otherwise than in the face of the enemy” Wani was the first person from Kashmir to be awarded the Ashok Chakra, making his achievement even more significant.
