New Delhi, July 23 (JKNS): The Election Commission of India (ECI) on Wednesday announced that it has initiated the process for conducting the Vice-Presidential election following the resignation of Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar.

According to a statement issued by the Commission as per news agency JKNS, the Ministry of Home Affairs, through a Gazette Notification dated July 22, 2025, formally notified Dhankhar’s resignation.

The ECI, exercising its mandate under Article 324 of the Constitution and as per the Presidential and Vice-Presidential Elections Act, 1952, has started preparations for the Vice-Presidential Elections 2025.

“On completion of the preparatory activities, the announcement of the Election Schedule to the office of the Vice-President of India will follow as soon as possible,” the statement said.

Key pre-announcement activities underway include the preparation of the Electoral College (comprising elected and nominated members of the Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha), finalisation of the Returning Officer/Assistant Returning Officers, and the preparation of background material on all previous Vice-Presidential elections.

The Commission assured that the election schedule will be announced at the earliest. (JKNS)
