Srinagar, July 26 (JKNS): The Principal of Government Medical College (GMC) Srinagar, Professor Dr. Iffat Hassan Shah, on Saturday met with Press Club of Kashmir President Mohammad Saleem Pandit and several journalists who were assaulted during the PG doctors’ strike at SMHS Hospital on Wednesday, assuring strict action after a government inquiry.
In a statement isaued here to news agency JKNS reads, During the meeting, Dr. Iffat was informed about the misconduct exhibited by junior doctors towards media personnel on the SMHS hospital premises while they were covering the strike.
Mr. Pandit voiced his discontent regarding the treatment of journalists, highlighting that three media representatives were assaulted by protesting doctors, who even pushed aside a police officer attempting to shield them.
Dr. Iffat Shah assured that appropriate action would be taken against the involved PG students following the completion of an inquiry by a government-appointed officer.
She emphasised that the treatment of journalists would be included in the inquiry’s terms of reference to prevent such incidents in the future and stressed the importance of restoring positive relations between the medical and media communities, it reads.
The Deputy Superintendent of Police from the Shaheed Gunj police station, also present at the meeting, was requested by the journalists to pursue the investigation regarding the assault. They also noted that several Medical Representatives were supporting the doctors’ strike, it reads.
The police official assured that the initial investigations have been set in motion, which would lead to the lodging of the FIR against the doctors found involved in the manhandling of the media persons.
The meeting concluded on a happy note, where the media persons agreed to support the health care system of the Kashmir valley, reads the statement. (JKNS)
