Kulgam: Devsar MLA, Peerzada Feroz Ahmad, today conducted an on-ground assessment of the flood-affected regions in the Qaimoh and Frisal blocks of Kulgam. Accompanied by officials from various line departments, the MLA visited the most devastated areas to understand the scale of the damage caused by recent floods and to monitor relief and rehabilitation efforts.

During the visit, residents from both blocks presented their grievances, seeking immediate government intervention. The MLA assured the locals that all legitimate concerns would be addressed in a timely manner.

Speaking to the media, Peerzada Feroz Ahmad expressed serious concerns regarding the rampant illegal mining activities in the region, which he believes have significantly worsened the flood situation. According to him, illegal mining is not only leading to severe environmental degradation but is also increasing the destructiveness of floods by eroding riverbanks and triggering frequent landslides.

“The issue of illegal mining has reached alarming levels,” the MLA said. “These activities have caused the erosion of riverbanks, exacerbating the effects of flooding. Immediate action must be taken to stop this practice and prevent further damage to our environment and infrastructure.”

Peerzada also emphasized the need for collaborative efforts from local administration, law enforcement, and environmental bodies to clamp down on illegal mining operations. He instructed relevant authorities to expedite the damage assessment process and prioritize the restoration of vital infrastructure, while also ensuring that basic amenities are provided to the families affected by the floods.

The MLA has called for a thorough investigation into the illegal mining activities in the area, urging the enforcement of stringent laws to prevent further exploitation of the region’s natural resources.

“Protecting our environment and the livelihood of our people is my top priority. The government will leave no stone unturned in providing relief to those affected by the floods, while also working tirelessly to protect our rivers and streams from illegal activities,” Peerzada assured.

Local residents have expressed their hope that the MLA’s intervention will lead to meaningful actions addressing both the flood management issues and the growing problem of illegal mining. The community remains hopeful that with the government’s commitment, their long-standing concerns will finally be addressed effectively. (JKNS)
