Srinagar, Oct 4 (JKNS): The J&K Emergency Relief Organization, under the Department of Disaster Management, Relief, Rehabilitation & Reconstruction, has issued a public advisory following a significant weather alert from the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Srinagar.
As per news agency JKNS DDMRRR in an advisory stated that, according to the IMD, an active Western Disturbance is set to impact Jammu and Kashmir from October 4, 2025. Widespread rain and snowfall over higher reaches are expected between October 5 and 7, with the peak intensity likely from the evening of October 5 to the afternoon of October 7.
The areas expected to be affected in the higher reaches include Anantnag, Pahalgam, Kulgam, Sinthan Pass, Shopian, Pir Ki Gali, Sonamarg-Zojila, Bandipora-Razdan Pass, Gulmarg, and Kupwara-Sadhna Pass.
Light snowfall has been forecast for the middle reaches, while the Kashmir plains are expected to receive moderate to heavy rainfall. In the Jammu division, isolated heavy to very heavy rain is likely, accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, hail, and strong winds of 40–50 kmph, gusting up to 60–70 kmph.
Authorities have warned that adverse weather conditions may disrupt surface transport, including traffic on the Jammu-Srinagar and Srinagar-Leh highways, as well as roads in middle and higher altitude regions.
There is also a forecast of moderate to severe thunderstorms and lightning with gusty winds at many locations. Vulnerable areas may witness landslides, mudslides, and shooting stones. Farmers have been advised to suspend all agricultural operations from October 5 to 7.
A rise in water levels in rivers, local streams, and nallas is expected, with a possibility of waterlogging in low-lying areas. Travel and communication in high-altitude and snow-bound regions are also likely to be impacted.
Following a review of the situation, the administration has directed all frontline departments, emergency responders, and disaster management teams to activate men and machinery as per protocol. In the interest of public safety, precautionary measures have been issued.
People have been advised to stay indoors during heavy rain, snowfall, or thunderstorms and to keep emergency supplies such as water, food, medicines, batteries, blankets, and torches ready. Residents have been urged to avoid unnecessary travel and follow instructions from local authorities.
Citizens have been cautioned not to venture into flooded rivers, streams, or nallas, and to stay away from fallen electric wires or exposed equipment. Travel on landslide-prone roads and high-altitude passes has been discouraged.
The advisory also urges people in flood-prone or low-lying areas to evacuate if instructed. Rooftops, loose objects, and farm equipment should be secured, and vulnerable family members should remain indoors. Residents have been asked to stay updated through official IMD and disaster management channels.
People have been told to avoid moving livestock unnecessarily, and to stay away from avalanche-prone zones and blocked natural watercourses.
