The abrogation of Article 370 and Article 35A in August 2019 marked a seismic shift in the history of Jammu and Kashmir, a region long cherished as the crown jewel of India yet burdened by decades of conflict. For years, the valley’s breathtaking landscapes, snow-capped peaks and serene lakes were overshadowed by narratives of unrest, separatism and geopolitical tensions. The decision to revoke these constitutional provisions was a bold and contentious move, sparking debates across India and the world. Yet, six years on, the transformation of Jammu and Kashmir is undeniable. The region has transcended its troubled past to emerge as a vibrant hub on the global stage, hosting international summits, sporting events, marathons and cultural festivals that showcase its potential as a land of opportunity, peace and unparalleled beauty. This journey from a valley mired in conflict to a global vista of promise reflects India’s vision of integrating Kashmir fully into its national fabric while inviting the world to witness its renaissance.
In 2023, Jammu and Kashmir hosted the G20 Tourism Working Group meeting in Srinagar, a landmark event that brought delegates from the world’s most powerful economies to the banks of Dal Lake. The choice of Srinagar was symbolic, signalling to the international community that Kashmir was no longer a region defined by conflict but a place ready to engage with the world. Delegates marvelled at the valley’s natural beauty, its rich cultural heritage and the warmth of its people. The event was not just a diplomatic success but a showcase of India’s confidence in presenting Kashmir as a global destination. The successful hosting of the G20 meeting, with its stringent security and logistical demands, demonstrated the region’s capacity to manage high profile international gatherings, putting Kashmir firmly on the map of global diplomacy.
Beyond diplomacy, Kashmir has also become a hub for sports and adventure tourism, drawing athletes and enthusiasts from across the globe. The valley’s rugged terrain, pristine rivers and majestic mountains have long made it a paradise for adventure seekers, but security concerns had limited its potential. Post abrogation, the government’s efforts to stabilise the region and promote tourism have borne fruit. International and national sporting events have flourished, from cricket tournaments in the lush fields of Srinagar to adventure sports in Gulmarg’s snowy slopes. The Kashmir Marathon, launched in recent years, has become a celebrated annual event, attracting runners from India and abroad. Participants traverse scenic routes along the Jhelum River and through apple orchards, experiencing the valley’s beauty while challenging themselves physically. These events have not only boosted tourism but also fostered a sense of normalcy and pride among locals, who see their homeland being celebrated on a global stage.
Cultural festivals have also played a pivotal role in rebranding Kashmir. The region’s rich tapestry of art, music and cuisine has been showcased through events like the Kashmir Literature Festival and the Jammu and Kashmir Tourism Festival, which draw artists, writers and tourists from around the world. These festivals highlight the syncretic culture of Kashmir, where Sufi traditions, folk music and intricate handicrafts like Pashmina shawls and Kashmiri carpets captivate global audiences. The revival of the Srinagar International Film Festival has further added to the region’s cultural allure, with filmmakers and actors from India and beyond gathering to celebrate cinema against the backdrop of the Himalayas. These events have not only boosted the local economy but also allowed Kashmiris to share their stories, dispelling stereotypes and fostering a deeper understanding of their heritage.
The transformation of Kashmir is not merely about hosting events; it is about the broader socio-economic changes that have enabled this global outreach. The abrogation of Article 370 opened the doors for investment and development, which had been stifled by the region’s special status. Infrastructure projects, from new highways to upgraded airports, have made Kashmir more accessible to the world. The expansion of Srinagar’s Sheikh ul Alam International Airport and the development of tourism infrastructure in places like Pahalgam and Sonmarg have made it easier for international visitors to explore the valley.
Economic opportunities have also expanded, empowering the youth of Kashmir to dream beyond the constraints of the past. The government’s focus on skill development and entrepreneurship has led to a surge in startups and small businesses, particularly in tourism, agriculture and handicrafts. The famous Kashmiri saffron, apples and walnuts are now reaching global markets, with e-commerce platforms enabling local farmers and artisans to connect with buyers worldwide. This economic integration has not only improved livelihoods but also instilled a sense of agency among Kashmiris, who are increasingly seeing themselves as stakeholders in India’s growth story.
Security remains a critical factor in Kashmir’s transformation. The years following the abrogation saw a concerted effort to curb militancy and restore peace. While challenges persist, the decline in violence and the increased presence of security forces have created a stable environment conducive to tourism and investment. The local administration’s efforts to engage with communities, address grievances and promote dialogue have also contributed to a gradual rebuilding of trust. For the people of Kashmir, the sight of international delegates, athletes and tourists walking their streets is a powerful reminder that their homeland is no longer defined by conflict but by its potential to inspire and connect.
The global spotlight on Kashmir has also had a profound cultural and psychological impact. For decades, the valley was viewed through the lens of conflict, its beauty overshadowed by headlines of unrest. Today, as images of marathon runners, G20 delegates and cultural festivals flood social media and international media, a new narrative is taking shape. Kashmiris are reclaiming their identity as custodians of a land that is not just a geopolitical flashpoint but a global treasure. This shift is particularly significant for the younger generation, who are growing up in a Kashmir that is open to the world, where opportunities for education, employment and global engagement are no longer distant dreams.
India’s vision for Kashmir extends beyond hosting events or boosting tourism; it is about integrating the region into the global community while preserving its unique identity. The abrogation of Article 370 was a step toward ensuring that Kashmiris have the same rights, opportunities and aspirations as their fellow Indians. The global vistas now opening up for Kashmir are a testament to the resilience of its people and the transformative power of bold policy decisions. The valley’s journey from a region of isolation to a hub of global engagement is a story of hope, perseverance and reinvention.
As Kashmir continues to host international summits, sporting events and cultural festivals, it is writing a new chapter in its history. The world is no longer looking at the valley through the prism of conflict but as a destination of promise and possibility. From the serene waters of Dal Lake to the vibrant markets of Srinagar, Kashmir is inviting the world to witness its beauty, its culture and its spirit. This is not just a transformation of a region but a reaffirmation of India’s commitment to unity, progress and peace. The valley, once shrouded in uncertainty, is now a beacon of hope, standing tall on the global map, ready to embrace the future while honouring its timeless heritage.
