Banihal, Nov 10 (JKNS): Government Degree College Banihal commemorated “Iqbal Day” with tremendous zeal, enthusiasm, and fervor, with the subject “Allama Iqbal: The Poet of the East.” In honor of the event, the Department of Urdu, organized a programme in which various speakers expressed their views on Allama Iqbal and His poetry.
The event was inaugurated by Dr. Shafiq Ahmed Katoch, Principal, GDC Banihal. In his opening remarks, he delivered an insightful address on the eminent 20th-century poet-philosopher. He highlighted the relevance of Iqbal’s poetry and emphasized its role in awakening human consciousness during the colonial era. He also presented an overview of the central themes in Iqbal’s works, including independence, capitalism, democracy, religion, politics, culture, spirituality, mysticism, self-realization, nationalism and unity, social justice and equality, as well as the fading grandeur of Islamic civilization. The Principal concluded by noting that Allama Iqbal’s poetry and philosophical ideas continue to hold profound relevance in contemporary times.
On the occasion, Dr. Sajad Ahmed Ganie shed light on Allama Iqbal’s poetry. He stated that Iqbal was not only a poet but also a great thinker and philosopher of his time, whose influence extended across the literary world. Dr. Sajad elaborated on how Iqbal consistently emphasized in his works the importance of self-discovery and the pursuit of a deeper connection with God. He further explained the profound spiritual and intellectual significance of these themes.
Dr Zafar Hayat Sohil also talked about the poetry of Allama Iqbal and emphasized the importance of understanding it on a wider scale. He remarked that Iqbal was not a poet of any specific class, religion or region but a poet of humanity, whose poetry contains deep messages and guidance for all mankind.
The event was attended by a large number of students and many faculty members of the college. The event concluded with the vote of thanks presented by Dr. Bilal Ahmed Tantray. (JKNS)
