Srinagar, Dec 3 (JKNS): The J&K Handicapped Welfare Society on Wednesday issued a heartfelt appeal to the government, urging immediate intervention to address the long-standing neglect and hardships faced by persons with disabilities across the Union Territory.

Protesting in Srinagar as per news agency JKNS, the Society said that thousands of disabled individuals in Jammu and Kashmir continue to struggle without adequate support systems, despite repeated pleas and legal entitlements guaranteed to them.

“It is unfortunate that the sufferings of disabled persons have not been addressed with seriousness. We are helpless people fighting daily battles just to survive with dignity,” the Society stated, calling the media its “last hope” to amplify their grievances.

The Society, led by Chairman Sajad Anwar Masoodi, outlined several key demands, urging the government to act without delay.

Demanding, Provision of fuel-operated three-wheeler scooters to ensure mobility and livelihood opportunities. Implementation of the mandated 4% reservation for disabled persons in all government departments. Priority access to water and electricity supply for disabled households.

Zero-interest loans to help disabled persons start small businesses. Special employment schemes dedicated to disabled youth. Laptops with screen-reading software for visually impaired students and educated youth. Strengthening of the Braille education system from pre-primary to university level. Access to all welfare schemes available to physically disabled persons across India, protesters said.

“We are not asking for mercy, we are asking for our rights, dignity, and an equal place in society,” the statement added, urging the administration to protect and uplift the disabled community of Jammu and Kashmir.

The Society appealed to the Lieutenant Governor’s administration to take “immediate corrective measures” so that persons with disabilities may live and work with dignity. (JKNS)
