New Delhi, Dec 4 (JKNS): The long-awaited Kashmiri Pandits Recourse, Restitution, Rehabilitation & Resettlement Bill 2022 is likely to be taken up for discussion in the Rajya Sabha on December 5.
The private member’s bill, moved by Kashmir-origin Member of Parliament Vivek Tankha, aims to address long-pending concerns of the displaced Kashmiri Pandit community that faced a mass exodus in 1990.
The bill was earlier selected through a draw of lots in September; however, it could not be listed for discussion due to procedural constraints. This time, with the President of India granting approval once again—communicated to MP Tankha by the Rajya Sabha Secretariat on November 14—the stage is set for the bill to be formally tabled.
Focusing on a comprehensive framework for rehabilitation and resettlement of Kashmiri Pandits residing across India and abroad, the bill has generated renewed interest and expectations within the community.
The All India Kashmiri Samaj (AIKS), a prominent representative body of Kashmiri Pandits with affiliates worldwide, has intensified its efforts to gather broad-based support for the proposed legislation. In an official statement, AIKS President Ravinder Pandita confirmed that the organisation has reached out to all four Shankaracharyas, seeking their endorsement for the bill.
“We have issued letters and personally met the Shankaracharyas to discuss the importance of this legislation. This bill deserves support from all political parties,” Pandita said, expressing hope for a positive outcome when the bill is presented in the Upper House.
As the Rajya Sabha gears up for the December 5 session, all eyes remain fixed on the fate of this significant private member’s bill, which carries deep emotional and socio-political implications for the displaced Kashmiri Pandit community. (JKNS)
