Srinagar, Dec 5 (JKNS): Union Minister for Minority Affairs Kiren Rijiju on Friday said that more than 1.51 lakh Waqf properties have so far been registered on the UMEED Portal, adding that the government will not impose penalties or strict action for the next three months against those who are yet to complete the process.
Speaking to reporters in New Delhi, as per news agency JKNS, Rijiju said, “As of this evening, over 1,51,000 Waqf properties have been registered on the UMEED Portal. Some states have performed very well Karnataka alone has registered around 50,800 properties. Punjab has also done well, and Jammu & Kashmir too has shown good progress.”
The Minister said that today marks the last date for registration, yet lakhs of properties remain unregistered. He added that the decision to allow a three-month relaxation was taken after several MPs and community representatives sought additional time, citing difficulties faced by mutawallis in completing the process.
Rijiju clarified that while the Supreme Court had clearly stated that the deadline could not be extended beyond six months, Waqf Tribunals have the authority to grant an extension of up to another six months in cases where genuine issues arise.
He urged mutawallis who are still unable to complete the registration to approach the Tribunal for relief, and to utilize the grace period responsibly.
“The government has given this relaxation keeping in mind the concerns of the community, but the registration process must be completed at the earliest,” he added. (JKNS)
