Srinagar, Dec 5 (KNC): In a significant gesture of cultural diplomacy, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has gifted premium Kashmiri saffron to Russian President Vladimir Putin placing the Valley’s world-famous ‘Red Gold’ on an international pedestal, as per news agency JKNS.
The prized saffron, known locally as Kong or Zaffran, is harvested from the highland fields of Pampore and is globally admired for its rich crimson colour, intense aroma, and potent flavour. Backed by the prestigious Geographical Indication (GI) tag and featured under the One District One Product (ODOP) initiative, Kashmiri saffron stands as a testament to the region’s heritage, artistry, and centuries-old farming tradition.
Farmers from the saffron belts of Pulwama and Pampore have expressed immense pride, calling the gesture a moment that elevates Kashmir’s agricultural identity on the global stage. They believe the move reaffirms the spice’s reputation as one of the purest and most valuable in the world.
Often called “Red Gold” for its rarity and economic value, the crop remains the livelihood of thousands of families who meticulously hand-harvest the delicate stigmas each season.
Renowned for its medicinal richness, antioxidant properties, and culinary excellence, Kashmiri saffron continues to symbolize the Valley’s natural purity now reaching the highest levels of global diplomatic exchange. (JKNS)
