Srinagar, Dec 09 (JKNS): Police in Srinagar on tuesday arrested former terrorist commander turned separatist leader Javid Ahmad Mir, popularly known as Javid Nalka, in connection with a 1996 terrorism-related case registered at Police Station Shergari.
A senior police official told news agency JKNS that Mir, son of Mohammad Yousuf Mir and a resident of Zaina Kadal, Srinagar, was taken into custody today. He is wanted in FIR No. 192/1996, registered under Sections 341, 148, 336, 332 RPC, 7/27 Arms Act, and 13 UAPA, relating to events that took place on 17 July 1996.
Police said the accused has been lodged at Police Station Shergari for further legal proceedings.
Before joining separatist politics, Mir was known to have been a terrorist commander in the early 1990s. He later surrendered and became associated with separatist groups, including the now-banned JKLF.
Meanwhile an official said that as per FIR records, Mir along with several others was accused of leading a large procession in July 1996, during which a mob carrying the body of slain terrorist Hilal Ahmad Beigh clashed with police at Naaz Crossing, Srinagar.
The crowd allegedly resorted to stone pelting, rioting and anti-India sloganeering, causing injuries to police personnel and damage to public property.
The 1996 Shergari FIR had also named several separatist leaders, including Syed Ali Shah Geelani, Abdul Gani Lone, Nayeem Khan, Shabir Shah, Shakeel Bakshi and Javed Mir. —(JKNS)
