Jammu, Dec 16 (JKNS): Inspector General of Police (IGP) Jammu, Bhim Sen Tuti, on Tuesday said that a Special Operations Group (SOG) jawan lost his life during an anti-terror operation in the Majalta area of Udhampur district, while three terrorists are believed to be hiding in the surrounding forest area.
Director General of Police (DGP) Jammu and Kashmir, Nalin Prabhat, Inspector General of Police Jammu Bhim Sen Tuti along with other senior officers, paid floral tributes to the martyred jawan.
Talking to reporters on the sidelines of the wreath-laying ceremony of the fallen SOG personnel, IGP Tuti as per news agency JKNS said that the operation was launched on Monday evening following specific and credible intelligence inputs about the presence of terrorists in the area.
He said security forces established contact with the terrorists soon after the operation began, triggering an exchange of fire. A small SOG team was initially involved in the encounter.
During the firefight, SOG jawan Amjad Ali Khan, a resident of Poonch, sustained serious injuries. “He was evacuated immediately, but despite all efforts, he succumbed to his injuries due to heavy blood loss. We have lost a courageous soldier,” the IGP said.
The IGP said that after the initial firing, the terrorists escaped deeper into a dense forest area. However, all possible escape routes have been sealed and a tight security cordon has been established.
“The operation is continuing. A large-scale combing operation has been launched with the assistance of the Army and additional security personnel deployed in the area,” he said.
According to initial assessments, three terrorists are believed to be holed up in the forest. “The intelligence input was accurate and during the exchange of fire, the presence of three terrorists was confirmed,” IGP Tuti added. (JKNS)
