New Delhi, Dec 28 (JKNS): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday drew national attention to the deep-rooted cultural and historical heritage of Jammu and Kashmir, recounting the remarkable rediscovery of an ancient Buddhist complex in Baramulla during his monthly radio address Mann Ki Baat.
In the 129th episode of the programme, as per news agency JKNS, Prime Minister Modi narrated how a long-forgotten archaeological site in the Jehanpora area of Baramulla district came to light through a blend of modern technology and historical research. He said the discovery stands as a testament to Kashmir’s rich civilisational past and its significant contribution to Buddhist heritage.
PM Modi explained that for decades, large mounds scattered across Jehanpora were seen as ordinary land formations, with little awareness of their historical value. The perception changed when an archaeologist examined the site more closely, prompting a detailed scientific investigation using tools such as drone surveys and advanced land mapping.
The Prime Minister noted that the breakthrough came when researchers linked the site to an old, unclear photograph preserved in a museum in France. The image depicted three Buddhist stupas in Baramulla, helping experts establish the true identity of the mounds as remnants of an ancient Buddhist complex.
According to PM Modi, the findings revealed that the site dates back nearly 2,000 years, underscoring Jammu and Kashmir’s prominent role as a centre of spirituality, learning and cultural exchange in ancient times. He said such discoveries reaffirm Kashmir’s historical importance and enrich the broader narrative of India’s civilisational journey.
Emphasising the need to preserve heritage, the Prime Minister said rediscovering and protecting such sites connects present generations with their roots and strengthens collective cultural pride. He added that the Baramulla discovery shows how history, technology and global cooperation can together revive forgotten chapters of the past.
Concluding his address, PM Modi said Jammu and Kashmir’s heritage continues to inspire the nation and carries timeless messages of harmony, knowledge and shared history. (JKNS)
