Srinagar, Jan 06 (JKNS): Dispelling widespread speculation over an alleged increase in passenger fares, Regional Transport Officer (RTO) Kashmir, Qazi Irfan Rasool, on Tuesday clarified that no fare hike has been approved or notified so far, asserting that the existing 2021 fare structure continues to remain in force.
The clarification comes amid continued confusion among commuters, with reports of some operators allegedly charging higher fares despite the absence of an official order.
Speaking to media persons, as per news agency JKNS, RTO Kashmir Qazi said that only a proposal regarding revision of fares has been forwarded to the government and any change will come into effect strictly after formal approval and issuance of an official notification.
“As of now, there is no order for fare enhancement. Transporters must strictly adhere to the 2021 rates until the government takes a final call and notifies it officially,” Irfan Rasool said.
He cautioned transporters and drivers against charging passengers extra fares, stating that any violation would invite strict action. The RTO also appealed to commuters not to pay more than the prescribed rates and to report instances of overcharging directly to his office.
“Passengers facing overcharging can send a message or voice note on WhatsApp at 9622002432. Immediate action will be taken against violators,” he said.
RTO Kashmir further explained that the fare revision proposals were examined by the Fare Fixation Committee after transporters raised concerns over rising operational costs and inflation. “After consultations with stakeholders from both regions, the recommendations were submitted to the government. The decision now lies with them,” he added.
Officials reiterated that until a formal notification is issued, the 2021 fare structure remains applicable across Jammu and Kashmir. (JKNS)
