Srinagar, Jan 6 (JKNS): A major fire incident broke out on Tuesday at a junkyard and adjoining commercial establishments in the Tengpora area of Srinagar, creating panic in the locality and prompting an extensive firefighting operation.
Officials told news agency JKNS that the fire originated from a junkyard where scrapped vehicles and other discarded materials were stored. Highly inflammable items, including foam, thinner and materials from a paint unit, fueled the flames, causing the fire to spread swiftly to nearby commercial structures.
Thick plumes of smoke were seen billowing from the site as the blaze intensified, affecting multiple units in the area. Several commercial structures sustained damage as the fire continued to spread.
On receiving information, multiple fire tenders were pressed into service and Fire and Emergency Services personnel launched efforts to contain the blaze and prevent it from reaching residential localities. Senior fire officials remained present at the spot to supervise the operation, which was ongoing at the time of filing this report.
Police and other emergency agencies also rushed to the scene to manage the situation and regulate traffic movement in the affected area.
No loss of life has been reported so far, while the extent of damage to property is being assessed. The cause of the fire will be ascertained after the firefighting operation is completed, officials said. (JKNS)
