Srinagar, Jan 19 (JKNS): Srinagar is undergoing a major civic overhaul under the Smart City Mission, with key infrastructure and public service projects nearing completion ahead of Republic Day celebrations, Divisional Commissioner Kashmir, Anshul Garg, said on Monday.
Speaking to reporters, Garg as per news agency JKNS, highlighted the historic Amira Kadal bridge, now redeveloped as a pedestrian-only bridge under the Smart City project. “Our Amira Kadal is a very old bridge and has been renovated by Smart City. It is now prepared as a pedestrian bridge. We are very happy and congratulate the entire Smart City team that soon the Hon’ble LG will dedicate it to the public,” he said.
He added that the redesigned bridge will not only benefit residents, shopkeepers, and businesses around Lal Chowk but also serve as a major tourist attraction. “It will bring additional tourist footfall, similar to Srinagar’s Zero Bridge and Habba Kadal, and benefit the business town,” Garg said.
The Div Com also noted that the riverfront has been extended up to Amira Kadal, providing uninterrupted access along both banks of the Jhelum for cyclists and walkers. “Cyclists can now ride and morning walkers can enjoy a 4.5-km stretch of the riverfront. It’s a major addition to Srinagar’s urban lifestyle,” he said.
Highlighting the city’s Integrated Command and Control Centre (ICCC), Garg said it is fully operational with 40 dedicated employees and a 24×7 public helpline. “Since February 15, our team has responded to over 250 citizen calls. Residents and tourists can reach out for any civic issue,” he added.
On solid waste management, Garg said the administration and Srinagar Municipal Corporation are implementing directives from the Chief Minister and courts to address issues at the Achan dumping site. “Waste recovery and legacy waste disposal are being executed at a fast pace. Regular reviews are being conducted to ensure timely resolution,” he said.
He also updated on Smart City electric buses, stating the service has received “very good feedback” from commuters. “Ridership is increasing steadily. We are adding another 100 e-buses and developing new charging stations near Super Market and Hazratbal to improve route efficiency,” Garg said.
Inviting citizens to Republic Day events, Garg said the main divisional function will be held at Bakshi Stadium. “All arrangements are complete. Children are excited for cultural programmes, and rehearsals have begun. Government buildings across Srinagar are being illuminated to mark the occasion. This is an important festival for us,” he added.
Garg concluded by congratulating all stakeholders for the Smart City initiatives, noting that these projects from public transport to urban aesthetics are set to redefine Srinagar’s civic infrastructure and quality of life. (JKNS)
