Srinagar, Jan 26 (JKNS): Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary on Monday said he remains optimistic about the restoration of statehood to Jammu and Kashmir, reiterating that the Prime Minister has already assured the same.

Speaking at the Republic Day function at Bakshi Stadium here, the Deputy CM, according to news agency JKNS, said the people of Jammu and Kashmir would soon witness the return of statehood. “The Prime Minister has promised the restoration of statehood.

We are hopeful that Jammu and Kashmir will soon reclaim its rightful status, as envisioned by Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru and Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah,” he said.

Highlighting key developmental measures, Choudhary said that under the Smart City initiative, around 200 new red buses have been inducted to strengthen the public transport system across urban areas.

He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to daily wagers, stating that their regularisation remains a top priority. “The government has assured permanent status to daily wagers and we are committed to fulfilling this promise,” he added.

The Deputy CM said the Omar Abdullah-led government is pushing forward with digital reforms to ensure transparency and efficient service delivery. “Jammu and Kashmir is moving towards a digital governance model,” he said.

On infrastructure, Choudhary said improving road connectivity is a major focus area. “Several bridges that were pending for decades have now been completed, significantly improving connectivity,” he said.

Referring to financial constraints under the Union Territory framework, he said Jammu and Kashmir is currently receiving limited funds compared to its statehood days. “Despite these challenges, we are hopeful that the Centre will consider releasing additional funds keeping in view the special circumstances of J&K,” he said.

He described traditional art and crafts as the economic backbone of the region. “Basoli paintings, Kani shawls and other handicrafts reflect our cultural heritage, and artisans are working tirelessly to revive this legacy,” he said.

The Deputy CM said the government is taking concrete steps to ensure safe drinking water by installing advanced machinery in various areas. He also announced the establishment of a new waste management plant in South Kashmir to tackle waste-related issues, particularly in rural regions.

Expressing confidence in the upcoming budget, Choudhary said it would be people-friendly and development-oriented. He also reiterated the government’s resolve to empower women across sectors.” (JKNS)
