Udhampur, Jan 27 (JKNS): Four persons, including a CRPF jawan, lost their lives in a road accident on the Jammu–Srinagar National Highway (NH-44) near Jakhani Chowk in Udhampur district on Tuesday, officials said.
An official told news agency JKNS that the accident took place around 11 am and involved a passenger bus, a stationary off-road vehicle and a motorcycle.
Bus rammed into an off-road vehicle that had been parked on the roadside for repairs.
“The impact crushed the vehicle, resulting in the death of a mechanic and the driver on the spot,” official said adding that the collision caused two persons to fall through a shattered window into a deep gorge.
“One of them was a CRPF jawan of 52 Battalion who was on leave and travelling at the time. He later succumbed to injuries,” he said, adding that the death toll rose to four.
Officials said CRPF and police teams carried out joint rescue operations and shifted the bodies to a nearby hospital for medico-legal procedures. The identity of one of the deceased is yet to be formally established.
Cognizance of the incident has been taken and further investigation into the incident is underway, officials added. (JKNS)
