Dehradun, Jan 29 (JKNS): Police have registered an FIR and arrested one accused in connection with the brutal assault on an 18-year-old Kashmiri boy in the Vikas Nagar area of Uttarakhand, the Jammu and Kashmir Students Association (JKSA) said on Thursday.

In an updated statement issued by JKSA to news agency JKNS, the student body said it raised the matter at the highest level with Uttarakhand Director General of Police (DGP) Deepam Seth, who assured strict and prompt action in the case.

According to JKSA, an FIR bearing No. 26/2026 has been lodged at Vikas Nagar Police Station against Sanjay Yadav and another individual under Sections 117(2) and 352 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). “The prime accused, Sanjay Yadav, has been taken into custody and legal proceedings are currently underway,” the statement said.

The DGP, JKSA said, has assured that authorities have taken the incident seriously and that the strongest possible action will be ensured to curb communal intimidation and protect the dignity, safety and rights of Kashmiri students and citizens.

Earlier, an 18-year-old Kashmiri boy selling shawls along with his family was allegedly attacked after being questioned about his identity in Vikas Nagar. JKSA had stated that after learning the family belonged to the Muslim community and hailed from Kashmir, the attackers turned violent, leaving the boy with multiple injuries, including a fractured arm and serious head injuries.

The injured youth was initially taken to a local hospital and later referred to Doon Hospital, Dehradun, where his condition was stated to be serious. Other family members were also allegedly assaulted during the incident.

While welcoming the registration of the FIR and arrest, JKSA said accountability must be time-bound, transparent and exemplary, adding that acts of communal profiling, mob violence and intimidation against vulnerable communities earning an honest livelihood cannot be allowed to become routine. —(JKNS)
