Srinagar, Jan 31 (JKNS): In an unprecedented community outreach initiative, the Jammu and Kashmir Police on Friday took their anti-drug message directly to the mosque pulpit in Gurez Valley, urging families and community elders to play a proactive role in safeguarding the youth from social evils.

As seen in videos as per news agency JKNS, addressing a Friday congregation, the local Station House Officer (SHO) interacted with religious scholars, elders and young people, highlighting the growing threats of narcotics, online gambling and misuse of social media. He described these issues as serious dangers undermining the social fabric of the valley.

In an emotional appeal, the SHO said he was speaking not only as a police officer but also as a member of the community, stressing that collective responsibility was essential to protect the younger generation. He cautioned that while the presence of hard drugs in Gurez remained limited, recent complaints had prompted the police to act at an early stage to prevent the problem from escalating.

Reiterating that the Jammu and Kashmir Police have launched an all-out campaign against drugs, the officer warned that strict legal action would be taken against offenders. At the same time, he emphasised that families play a crucial role in identifying early signs of addiction and seeking timely intervention, assuring that information shared with police would be kept confidential.

The SHO also raised concern over the increasing involvement of youth in online gambling and betting applications, stating that such activities were leading to financial distress and legal trouble. He informed the gathering that cases have already been registered against several individuals, with bank accounts frozen in some instances, and urged those involved to come forward voluntarily to avoid severe consequences.

Highlighting the misuse of social media, the officer warned about threats to privacy, family bonds and the dignity of young girls. He appealed to parents to remain vigilant, engage with their children and monitor their online activities. He also requested religious leaders to regularly address these social issues during sermons to spread awareness.

Calling for stronger community participation, the SHO suggested forming local committees of elders to keep watch over suspicious activities and maintain social harmony. He concluded by urging people to unite in eliminating drugs, gambling and other harmful practices from the region.

The initiative comes amid an intensified anti-narcotics drive by J&K Police across the Valley, combining strict enforcement with community-based awareness to curb drug abuse and protect the youth. (JKNS)
