Jammu, Feb 5 (JKNS): Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Wednesday said that Light Rail (Metrolite) projects have been proposed for both Jammu and Srinagar cities, and the final approval and funding from the Government of India is still awaited.

The Chief Minister, who also holds charge of the Housing and Urban Development Department, as per the news JKNS said this in a written reply to a question raised by MLA Arvind Gupta in the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly.

He informed the House that in-principle approval for the proposal of elevated Metrolite systems for the two capital cities—Jammu and Srinagar—was accorded by the Administrative Council on March 12, 2021, vide Decision No. 13.02.2021.

Omar Abdullah further said that Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) for the Metro/Light Rail projects have already been prepared and submitted to the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA), Government of India, for appraisal and funding. The estimated cost of the project stands at ₹4,069.48 crore for Jammu city and ₹4,892.51 crore for Srinagar city.

He added that the timeline for commencement, construction and operation of the projects will be decided only after receiving final approval and funding from the Centre, which is still awaited. (JKNS)
