Bandipora(JKNS): The Indian Army’s Snow Cricket Tournament concluded on today in the snowbound Gurez Valley of Bandipora district, drawing enthusiastic participation from local teams and spectators alike. The unique sporting event, played amid thick snow and freezing temperatures, showcased the passion and resilience of young cricketers from the region.

A total of 32 teams from across Gurez Valley participated in the tournament, making it one of the largest winter sporting events held in the area. The competition not only promoted sportsmanship but also provided a healthy platform for youth engagement during the harsh winter months.

In the final match, Chorwan posted a strong total of 112 runs in 20 overs, setting a challenging target for their opponents. Markoot, in reply, struggled against disciplined bowling and were bowled out for 55 runs. Chorwan emerged as the champions with a convincing victory and were awarded a cash prize of ₹50,000 for their impressive performance.

The 109 Commander attended the closing ceremony as the chief guest, along with other dignitaries, who appreciated the players for their dedication and competitive spirit. The guests congratulated the winning team and encouraged all participants to continue pursuing sports alongside their studies.

Speaking to the media, a local player said that the tournament gave young players a rare opportunity to showcase their talent during the winter season when most outdoor activities come to a halt in Gurez. He said such initiatives motivate youth to stay positive, disciplined, and physically active. He expressed gratitude to the Indian Army for organizing the event and providing proper arrangements despite challenging weather conditions.

He added that events like these also help in strengthening bonds among different villages in the valley, as players interact, compete, and build friendships. According to him, the tournament created a festive atmosphere in the region and brought much-needed excitement to the youth.

Another local player said that playing cricket on snow was both challenging and memorable. He mentioned that the conditions tested their fitness, patience, and teamwork. He appreciated the efforts of the organizers for ensuring smooth conduct of the matches and maintaining safety throughout the tournament.

He further said that such sports activities inspire young people to stay away from negative influences and focus on building a bright future through hard work and unity.(JKNS)
