Gulmarg, Feb 23 (JKNS): Advisor to the Chief Minister, Nasir Aslam Wani, on Monday said the government is taking concrete steps to transform Gulmarg into an internationally recognised skiing hub as the sixth edition of the Khelo India Winter Games commenced with participation from across India and overseas.
Speaking at the inaugural ceremony, Wani, as per news agency JKNS, said hosting the prestigious winter games repeatedly demonstrates Jammu and Kashmir’s rising prominence in the country’s winter sports calendar.
He termed it a proud occasion for the Union Territory and said the broader objective is to attract more global sporting events to Gulmarg in the coming years.
The Advisor noted that while weather fluctuations can at times impact winter activities, consistent efforts are underway to upgrade facilities and strengthen Gulmarg’s standing as India’s premier skiing centre.
He further said the administration is promoting diverse sports disciplines to build a strong and sustainable sporting ecosystem across Jammu and Kashmir.
Welcoming athletes from abroad, Wani said international participation not only enhances the stature of the games but also helps project Jammu and Kashmir as a preferred winter sports destination on the global map.
Highlighting the potential of local youth, he said the region is home to exceptional sporting talent which, with adequate infrastructure and professional training, can achieve success at national and international levels. (JKNS)
