Gulmarg, Feb 23 (JKNS): Jammu and Kashmir Sports Minister Satish Sharma on Monday asserted that tourism and sports will remain central to the Union Territory’s growth story, stating that efforts to destabilise peace will not deter development initiatives.

Addressing the gathering during the inauguration of the Khelo India Winter Games 2026 in Gulmarg, Sharma, as per news agency JKNS, said the successful hosting of the sixth edition of the Games reflects the resilience and determination of the people of Jammu and Kashmir.

Referring to the recent Pahalgam incident, the Minister said such acts cannot undermine the government’s resolve to strengthen tourism and promote sports as avenues for youth empowerment and economic expansion.

“We are fully capable of facing challenges. Tourism will continue to flourish and sports will drive constructive transformation,” he said.

Sharma described it as a matter of pride that Gulmarg has developed into a prominent winter sports destination, attracting athletes and tourists from across the country. He said sustained investments are being made to upgrade sports infrastructure and encourage local talent in skiing, snowboarding and other winter disciplines.

The Minister added that winter tourism activities are being broadened to areas such as Sonamarg, Bhaderwah and the Pir Panjal belt to diversify opportunities and increase footfall.

Highlighting inclusive growth, he said the government is focusing on promoting homestays in rural and high-altitude regions so that local communities directly benefit from tourism.

Reaffirming the government’s commitment to peace and progress, Sharma said tourism stands as a symbol of stability and prosperity and will play a pivotal role in shaping Jammu and Kashmir’s economic future. (JKNS)
