JKNC holds condemnation meet; leaders including Mehbooba Mufti, Altaf Bukhari, Sajad Lone, Mirwaiz-Kashmir, Begum Khalida Shah, Grand Mufti Nasir-ul-Islam, Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi, Tariq Hameed Karra, and KTMF denounce attack on Former CM
Srinagar, Mar 12 (JKNS): Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Thursday spoke to National Conference president Dr. Farooq Abdullah following the firing incident targeting him during a wedding function in Jammu and assured a thorough investigation into the matter. While, political leaders and religious leaders across Jammu and Kashmir expressed shock and strong condemnation over the incident.
Political parties called for a thorough investigation into the security lapse that allowed the assailant to get close to the senior leader.
As already reported by JKNS, The attack occurred late Wednesday evening at Greater Kailash, where Dr. Abdullah was accompanied by Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary and senior NC leader Nasir Aslam Wani.
Fortunately, no one was injured, and the accused, Kamal Singh Jamwal, was apprehended by police and sent to five days of remand for further interrogation.
Dr Farooq Abdullah this morning in its first statement to media after firing incident on him in Jammu said that, i’hv never harmed anyone, and i Don’t know who the attacker was.
Farooq further said that, Home Minister Amit Shah Called him last night, Farooq said.
“He (HM Shah) asked me about my well-being, he informed me that the accused has been arrested and assured me that investigation will be done and will let you know what had happened,” Farooq said while quoting HM Shah as saying.
Several leaders condemned the incident, including PDP president Mehbooba Mufti, who described the attack as “grave” and welcomed the news that Abdullah was safe.
In solidarity, a condemnation meeting was held at the rulling JKNC headquarters in Nawai Subha Complex, where party leaders, MLAs, and workers denounced the attack and expressed full support for Dr. Abdullah. Investigation into the incident is ongoing.
Mehbooba wrote on X, “Shocked to hear about the grave attack on Dr Farooq Abdullah sahab. Relieved to know that he’s safe and doing well. Hope police gets to the bottom of this very perturbing security lapse.”
Apni Party president Altaf Bukhari urged a thorough probe to determine if the act was a drunken incident or part of a larger plan.
Bukhari wrote, “Glad to know that Farooq Abdullah Sahib escaped unharmed in the firing incident in Jammu. The assailant has been arrested, but the matter must be thoroughly investigated to determine whether it was just a drunken act by the attacker or something more serious.”
People’s Conference president Sajad Lone called the firing “cowardly”.
Sajad wrote on X, “Condemn the cowardly firing at Dr Farooq sahib and Surinder Choudhary Ji and Nasir Aslam sahib. Thanks to Allah Almighty that they are safe.”
While Mirwaiz Umar Farooq termed it deeply concerning, emphasizing the need for a detailed investigation.
Mirwaiz wrote on X, “News about the attempt on Dr Farooq Abdullah Sahibs life at a function in Jammu is concerning and condemnable. Relieved to know that he escaped unhurt. That someone with a loaded weapon got so close and fired at him, needs to be thoroughly probed.”
Senior NC leader and MP from Srinagar Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi also condemned the attack on its party chief.
Office of Ruhullah Mehdi wrote on X, “Hon’ble Member of Parliament Ruhullah Mehdi has strongly condemned the reprehensible incident reported in Jammu in which fire was opened on Dr. Farooq Abdullah and Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Chaudhary during a wedding function. He stated that such acts of violence are deeply concerning and emphasised that those responsible must be dealt with strictly in accordance with the law.”
J&K Pradesh Congress Committee president Tariq Hameed Karra also condemned the attack, stressing accountability and the need for strict legal action against the perpetrators.
Karra wrote on X, “”Strongly condemn the shocking firing incident on former CM Farooq Abdullah sb & other senior leaders reported in Jammu today. Such acts of violence are deeply disturbing and raise serious concerns about the prevailing security scenario in the region. The increasing criminalisation and lawlessness cannot be ignored. Those entrusted with maintaining law and order must be held accountable. The people deserve safety, stability, and a secure environment, and it is the responsibility of the administration to ensure that such incidents are not repeated. Praying for the safety and well-being of everyone”
Grand Mufti Nasir-ul-Islam highlighted the seriousness of the security lapse and called for measures to prevent such incidents in the future.
Meanwhile, the Kashmir Traders and Manufacturers Federation (KTMF) termed the incident a threat to democratic values and political stability, demanding a transparent investigation to bring those responsible to justice.
Awami National Conference president Begum Khalida Shah described the incident as a targeted assassination attempt and warned against rising regional hatred.
In a statement Begum Khalida said, She delivered a scathing indictment of what she termed an unforgivable and alarming collapse of security. “This cannot be dismissed as the act of a lone deranged individual. The circumstances strongly point to a far more serious and sinister design,” she asserted, noting the extraordinary breach that allowed an armed assailant to reach within point-blank proximity of senior political leaders. ANC President also voiced strong outrage at the captured assailant’s brazen and unapologetic behaviour during interrogation. (JKNS)
