Jammu, Mar 12 (JKNS): National Conference (NC) president and former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Dr Farooq Abdullah on Thursday said he initially thought the gunshot fired during a wedding function in Jammu was a firecracker, adding that his security team acted swiftly and prevented any harm.
Addressing reporters in Jammu, Dr Abdullah, as per news agency JKNS, said the incident occurred when he was leaving the wedding venue.
“I had gone to a wedding and when the bride arrived we took permission and left for home. As soon as I came out of the hall I heard a loud sound and thought it was a firecracker because such things happen at weddings,” he said.
He said he later came to know that a man had fired from a pistol. “My security guards immediately reacted and tried to pull his hand from behind, which destabilised him and the pistol went up. They then managed to grab the weapon,” he said.
Dr Abdullah said he does not know the accused and could not understand his motive. “I don’t know this man at all and I have never done anything wrong to anyone. I don’t know what his purpose was or what grudge he had,” he said.
He also thanked his security personnel for their timely action and said he was grateful that no harm was caused. “I am thankful to Allah that my security team was there and acted quickly. Because of them I am safe,” he added. (JKNS)
