Srinagar, Mar 14 (JKNS): Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Saturday called for the release of first-time detainees and urged authorities to revoke cases against those who were recently arrested, describing it as a gesture of goodwill and justice.
CM Omar inaugurated the Almond Blossom Festival at Badamwari, Srinagar, and highlighted the potential of Kashmir’s tourism sector while speaking on regional and international issues.
Addressing media persons on the sidelines of the inauguration, as per news agency JKNS, CM Omar Abdullah said, “First of all, I congratulate the Floriculture Department for decorating Badamwari so beautifully. We hope people will visit and take full advantage of the stalls and attractions here.” He added, “Today’s event marks the beginning of our tourist season, which will continue with the inauguration of the Tulip Garden the day after tomorrow. We hope a large number of tourists will visit and enjoy the beauty of Kashmir.”
Commenting on international developments, he said, “The release of Sonam Wangchuk is a positive step. We should never have arrested him under the NSA. Now that he is released, it is good, but the situation should not have arisen in the first place. Similarly, peace in Ladakh and the fulfillment of promises there remain important.”
On tourism challenges, the CM noted, “Ticket prices on international flights are increasing, and fuel surcharges have been introduced, which may impact the tourist season. Even then, we remain hopeful that the number of visitors will rise this year.”
Speaking on global affairs, he remarked, “Iran allowing Indian ships to pass through the Strait of Hormuz is a positive development. Anything that helps maintain fuel prices is beneficial. But above all, we want peace. The ongoing conflict in Iran is unjust and must end. Leadership decisions in Iran should be left to its citizens, not dictated by other nations. Peace in the region is ultimately in our own interest.”
On local security and law and order, CM Omar Abdullah emphasized, “After attacks on public figures, measures are being reviewed. But the reality is that some incidents should never have occurred. As an expression of goodwill, the cases against youngsters who were first-time offenders, many of whom hardly participated in protests, should be revoked and they should be released, especially with Ramzan and Eid approaching.”
The festival, according to the CM, is not only a celebration of nature but also an opportunity to promote Kashmir’s tourism, cultural heritage, and local economy while reinforcing the importance of peace and dialogue both locally and globally. (JKNS)
