New Delhi, Mar 22 (JKNS): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday scripted history by becoming the longest-serving head of government in India, surpassing the previous record held by Pawan Kumar Chamling.

With a total of 8,931 days in office as head of government covering his tenure as Chief Minister of Gujarat and as Prime Minister Modi has overtaken Chamling’s record of 8,930 days, marking a major milestone in the country’s political history.

The achievement reflects Modi’s long and continuous public service, having earlier served as the longest-serving Chief Minister of Gujarat and currently holding the distinction of being the Prime Minister with the longest prior experience as a Chief Minister.

He is also the first Prime Minister born after Independence and has led his party to successive victories in the Lok Sabha elections of 2014, 2019, and 2024.

Last year, as he entered the 25th year in public office, Modi expressed gratitude to the people of India, stating that his journey since taking oath as Gujarat Chief Minister in 2001 has been guided by a commitment to improve lives and contribute to national development.

Recalling the challenging circumstances during his early tenure in Gujarat including a devastating earthquake, droughts and instability he said these hardships strengthened his resolve to rebuild and transform the state.

He also shared that his mother’s advice to work for the poor and remain honest has been a guiding principle throughout his public life.

Highlighting Gujarat’s transformation, Modi noted that the state evolved into a model of governance with progress across sectors such as agriculture, industry and infrastructure.

Reflecting on his national journey, he recalled being named the prime ministerial candidate in 2013 during a period of governance challenges, and credited the people for giving a decisive mandate in 2014.

He further said that in the past decade, over 25 crore people have been lifted out of poverty, while initiatives aimed at empowering women, youth and farmers have strengthened the country’s development path.

Reaffirming his commitment, the Prime Minister said serving the nation remains his highest honour and pledged to continue working towards building a “Viksit Bharat” guided by constitutional values. (JKNS)
