Gudalur, Mar 21 (JKNS): A tourist from Chennai was successfully rescued after falling off a cliff at the Needle Rock View Point near Gudalur in Nilgiris district, following a challenging overnight operation carried out by the Madras Regimental Centre (MRC).
Officials said that the rescue operation was launched late last night by the MRC, Wellington, on the request of the civil administration after the tourist slipped and fell from the cliff and sustained serious injuries, suspected to be a spinal injury, leaving him incapacitated.
A rescue team led by Lt Col Chandan Mehta undertook the difficult mission in adverse conditions, including poor visibility, rugged terrain and high risk factors.
Given the terrain, a vertical lift was not feasible, prompting the team to establish a 70-metre zip line to safely retrieve the injured individual while ensuring minimal movement to avoid aggravating the injury.
The operation was successfully completed at around 3:30 am, after which the rescued tourist was immediately shifted to Government Hospital Ooty for further medical treatment, officials said. (JKNS)
