Budgam, Apr 13 (JKNS): Residents of Beerwah have expressed serious concern over the continued neglect of the Fire and Emergency Services (F&ES) department, urging authorities to immediately construct a dedicated building to strengthen emergency response in the area.

Locals stated that the Fire and Emergency unit in Beerwah is currently operating from a highly inadequate and cramped space, lacking sufficient room for fire tenders as well as staff. Despite catering to nearly 100 villages, the department continues to function without basic infrastructure.

The department plays a crucial role in responding to emergencies in areas such as Chewdara, Arizal, Kangripora, Zanigam, and several adjoining villages. However, residents pointed out that poor road connectivity in certain areas further delays emergency response.

Speaking on the issue, social activist Tariq Bhat said that land for the proposed Fire and Emergency Services building has already been identified and demarcated by the SDM office and Revenue Department officials. He added that the project is now awaiting the sanctioning of funds by the concerned department.

“During emergencies, fire tenders face significant delays in reaching affected locations due to narrow and underdeveloped roads, putting lives and property at serious risk,” he said.

Residents warned that in the event of a major fire incident, the existing infrastructure would be insufficient to handle the situation effectively, potentially leading to severe consequences.

They further stated that the demand for a dedicated Fire and Emergency Services station has been raised multiple times with higher authorities. According to locals, the identified state land is located near Bairam Hills in Ward No. 10 of Beerwah and has already been handed over to the concerned department.

However, despite the availability of land, construction has not yet commenced as the required funds are still pending approval.

Terming the department as vital for public safety, residents urged the authorities to expedite the release of funds and immediately begin construction of the Fire and Emergency Services station to ensure timely and efficient emergency response for the large population dependent on it. (JKNS)
