Srinagar, June 4 (JKNS): The Jammu and Kashmir Transport Department has announced a volunteer-driven initiative aimed at strengthening road safety awareness and reducing road accidents and fatalities across the Union Territory.

Transport Commissioner J&K, Vishesh Paul Mahajan, made the announcement through a post on X, as per news agency JKNS, inviting youngsters to join the department’s road safety mission on a voluntary basis.

According to the Transport Commissioner, the department is seeking to onboard young volunteers to assist in creating awareness about road safety and contribute towards achieving the target of reducing road accidents and deaths. He said the initiative will function on a district-wise basis, with specific tasks assigned to volunteers after the formation of the groups.

“Transport department is seeking to onboard youngsters for creating awareness about Road Safety and also to achieve the target of reduction in Road accidents and deaths. The onboarding will be on voluntary basis,” Mahajan wrote.

He clarified that the initiative will not carry any financial incentives or perks, adding that volunteers will be recognised through appreciation for their contribution. “There shall only be appreciation and no other perks. Target: Making JK Roads Accident free,” he stated.

The Transport Commissioner said interested volunteers can register with their respective Regional Transport Offices (RTOs) and Assistant Regional Transport Offices (ARTOs) from June 8 to June 30.

The initiative is part of broader efforts by the Transport Department to promote responsible road usage, improve traffic discipline and enhance public participation in road safety campaigns across Jammu and Kashmir, an official said. (JKNS)
